Shabby Chic Furniture – A Style Review

Shabby chic furniture is one of the hottest styles on the market right now, and it’s a choice that can add a simplistic but rugged charm to any room. The style mixes elements of old and new and creates a relaxing and inviting atmosphere that is perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, guest rooms, and even dining rooms. Consider shabby chic furniture and how you can use these pieces to make your space more charming overall.

A Bit of Shabby

The term shabby doesn’t really mean furniture that is rundown, chipped, or broken, but refers to a comfortable, well-worn look. This might include paint that is a bit worn in certain area or that seems thin.

For those who create this look by hand, they may use a dry paintbrush over the wet paint to make it seem thin or lined, or they may actually sandpaper around different areas to scuff up the paint. Usually these are areas that would get worn with the use of furniture, such as around corners, dresser knobs, and the backs of chairs.

This shabby look makes furniture seem a bit antique and well used, and gives it character over new, factory made pieces. The furniture feels older and therefore full of life and character.

A Bit of Chic

Shabby chic furniture also refers to furniture pieces that are stylish, even though they may be well worn. Wood pieces are made from real, solid wood and not pressboard or imitation wood. They typically have many details in their designs. In a lot of instances the pieces are made from reclaimed wood, re-purposed Indian fishing boats and doors.

Colors are also soft for shabby chic furniture and this is where the charm comes in with these pieces. Robin’s egg blue is a favorite option for this style, and off-white is used for many pieces as this gives them an antique look. Soft, sunny yellow is also often used for paint and fabric colors, and these colors are also combined for a chic look.

If you’re looking to bring some charm into your home or into just one room, consider some shabby chic pieces to brighten up your space and make it truly inviting.
