Caring for your Shaggy Rug

Caring for your Shaggy Rug

With a vintage vibe, shaggy rugs are a great way to add character, colour, texture and warmth to any room. But the challenge is how to care for them. To help, we've put together some tips on how you can keep your shaggy rug in tip-top condition.

Get Beating to Remove Loose Dirt

You can loosen any dirt in your shaggy rug by hanging it on the washing line in the sunlight for a few hours. This won't just help to detach any dust particles but will kill germs too. Beat your mat a little harder to remove any debris that often gets trapped in the long fibres of shaggy rugs.

Vacuum Your Rug

An easy way to clean your shaggy rug regularly is to use a vacuum to glide over both the top and underneath while suctioning dirt out. However, ensure you use a setting suitable for high-pile furnishings, otherwise you could do damage to your rug. Aim to clean your rug at least once every week to keep it looking its best, especially if it is regularly used by children and pets. If your rug is rarely walked on or utilised, once a month should be fine.

Treat Stains Immediately

As soon as something is spilt or trodden into your rug, it's important to treat the stain immediately for the best results. To do so, use an ordinary white cloth rinsed in colourless rug detergent. Keep dabbing until all the excess stain has come away.

Sometimes your shaggy rug needs a little extra TLC, which is when it's time to sprinkle some carpet-washing shampoo on your rug, using a mild bristled brush to rub the foam into the rug. Wait for around one hour to let the shampoo settle into the carpet and then brush through it thoroughly to remove any dirt grains.

Steam Clean Annually

Steam cleaning is another way to care for rugs and is usually recommended once a year or when heavily soiled. If you do not own a steam cleaner, you can hire one from a local store. Start by vacuuming your rug before using a suitable carpet detergent. After that, pour hot water and use the steam cleaner to blow air into it while pressing the water out of the carpet. Remember, shaggy rugs absorb a lot of water, so make sure you set aside enough time.
